Marion Eugene Carl was a member of the first US Marine Corps fighting squadron, VMF-1, in 1939. He later became an instructor before joining VMF-221. In 1942 VMF-221, flying Wildcats and Buffaloes, participated in the Battle of Midway and suffered heavy losses, Carl survived and brought down an A6M2 Zero. Reassigned to VMF-223, Carl flew as part of the ‘Cactus Air Force’ on Guadalcanal where he became the US Marine Corps’ first ace, gaining 16 aerial victories in the constant fighting. He later gained two more victories while leading VMF-223 over the Solomon Islands. Post-war, Carl flew as a test pilot and in 1965 returned to combat for operations over Vietnam.
