September’s Soldier of Fortune depicts none other than the legendary King Leonidas I of Sparta, best known for his doomed last stand at the Battle of Thermopylae!
Appointed leader of the Greek coalition against the second Persian invasion of Greece in 481, Leonidas’ hour of glory would come a year later at Thermopylae, where he and a small force (albeit one of more than the 300 of legend!) would mount an heroic defence against the vastly numerically superior Persian forces of Xerxes, before finally being betrayed to the enemy and outflanked. This battle would go down in history as one of the all-time great last stands, with Leonidas and his men becoming arguably the most recognisable symbols of Sparta to this day.
Leonidas is a busy man - he’s got a kingdom and a war to run, after all - and as such he’ll only be available for the month of September. After that, the Hot Gates await, and he must march to meet his fate. If you want him… come and take him!
